So over Xmas me and my sister where watching the telly and an advert for British airlines came on which had commentary along the lines of..
“So we only had some pocket change and put it in the slot machine and won 10er so we put it back in and the next thing we’ve won £480 best holiday ever” or something like that
My sister has never even bet on a scratch card and knows little of my gambling and she was blown away by the blatant glorification. As a problem gambler I can truly understand the impact this can have when your trying to stop it’s a million times worse than any casino promotion in my opinion, anyway it’s pissed off the mps now so hopefully this is a step in the right direction for problem gamblers in the UK, what do you guys think of this?
9th January 2019 at 7:03 pm #35822I don’t think the TV is a place for gambling adverts, of any kind. Everyone knows that TV influences people right? or they wouldn’t do it.. they wouldn’t spend 50k on an advert at prime TV time, unless they knew that it reaped reward for them.
so showing adverts = more punters= more cash flow = more gamblers = more problem gamblers.
As far as i’m concerned, they are like heroin dealers. here’.. come here, will give you £300 for your first deposit of £100.. (plus wagering requirements that god couldn’t succeed at.) etc.
Gambling, like Drinking, should be confided to adults, and NOT encouraged in any way to those under 18.
19th January 2019 at 7:16 pm #35825Personally I don’t agree with any of the adverts. Every half time commercial there is an ad. Every sporting event seems to be sponsored by a bookmaker or casino same as snooker players and dart players. Also having a tv channel showing roulette for hours at a time. All tobacco sponsored events cricket snooker formula and so were in the end abolished and so should gambling adds. 370000 problem gamblers in the UK I think it says. Wow that’s a massive figure and even then I doubt it’s a true figure.
19th January 2019 at 7:34 pm #35828I’ve been saying this for a long time. If it’s on TV then kids grow up with it thinking it’s ok. Like payday loans, I know a hell of a lot of young lads who have destroyed the next few years for themselves due to pay day loans because “everyone does it”. I knew a lad who blew his full wage on pay day, asked me to take him to town, got a payday loan and it was completely normal to him, wasn’t even phased. That was years ago and the first I knew of a pay day loan.
If gambling promotions like that carry on then the younger generation will definitely feel it.
9th January 2019 at 7:46 pm #35831I no longer gamble at all due to gamban but have as I gamble less I notice the adverts more.
I very rarely see any day time tv but from what I have seen it’s not too bad but fuck me when there is sports on its on another level. sat down to watch the footie at weekend and my 4 year old was asking what the bookies adverts were. just because he likes numbers and every few minutes there was someone shouting numbers at him. he thought it was some sort of game but just shows you how young it’s gets attention.
and then evenings there’s a lot i mean how many people play fucking bingo online it’s constant I am very surprised they get as much tv time as they do.
9th January 2019 at 7:49 pm #35832Agreed, I don’t know why it’s allowed. If you look at the cigarette industry in this country now they now must all have plain black packets, display health warnings, be hidden behind a counter and they are no longer allowed any form of advertisement. They’ve gone to all the trouble of doing this and yet they still allow gambling and alcohol to be advertised on TV. It really doesn’t make much sense at all. Even with the health warnings and gamble responsible shit they have to add on to these but let’s face it that doesn’t really do shite. If you tell a heroin addict that it’s going to eventually kill him do you think that is going to be enough to stop him?
Even with the ciggerette regulations in place the government doesn’t really want people to stop it’s just to cover themselves and make it seem like they care. All they really care about is the tax coming in from these addictive products.
I’ll leave it there before I go off on one…too late.
(Tried to post this before but wasn’t logged in, hope it doesn’t duplicate post)
9th January 2019 at 7:53 pm #35833the Mrs just pointed out something that had passed me by look at how many things are sponsored by gambling sites.
Jeremy Kyle is utter shite but it is one of the most watched programmes on tv and it is sponsored by foxy bingo.
you can’t say that is only aimed at adults

Yea good point man that isn’t even gambling related like sports.. I think it’s a similar tactic as putting a bookie or two in every council estate but none in affluent areas, when your on a low income a prize 10fold your bank account is far more appealing and with respect I don’t imagine the majority of full time jezza veiwers are the most well off. It’s a no better than smack dealers like Englishguy says “first ones free but once your hooked we’ll rinse ya”
9th January 2019 at 8:14 pm #35838It’s everywhere mate..I noticed Liverpool took on a sponsorship from Betvictor a few seasons back. Not like there isn’t a massive amount of kids who watch them week in week out.

And what a hypocrite he is self confessed ex gambling addict who owns race horses. So that’s not another form of gambling no. ?
9th January 2019 at 9:25 pm #35857everything is a form of gambling, some bets are just more reckless than others
9th January 2019 at 9:26 pm #35858I would like to see more adverts for software that blocks gambling. Gamban on the tele and Gamstop – there is literally no awareness of these services, i personally didn’t know they existed (Gamban) until Mcsplooger pointed out to me one time, in a troll post at the time, that stuff like this was available. Within hours of finding out about it i got in touch and started the ball rolling on what i offer these days.
An unbelievable amount of people have thanked me for the Gamban codes and they virtually all have the same comment….. didn’t even know it was available.
It’s difficult for me to say there should be no gambling adverts at all on the tele because people should still be free to choose to gamble if they wish but there definitely needs to be a watershed, after 9pm gambling adverts are fine, there should be no reference to gambling at all on any daytime television program, no gambling sponsors for anything that is aired before 9pm.
People may throw back at me that my videos are available at any time of the day and on YouTube – from my analytics though, i know that no signed in person under the age of 18 has ever watched any of my videos, it is 0% so clearly they don’t come up for children – when i search me on my sons iPad for example, i don’t show up so clearly i would never be recommended.
9th January 2019 at 9:43 pm #35866I tried to post but think it had logged me out.
anyway the just of it was adverts should be after the watershed with a 1:1 ratio of adverts vs support.
and I doubt there is anything bandit can do but his videos can be watched by anyone of any age without logging into to youtube.
Not a dig just what it is.
9th January 2019 at 9:47 pm #35852Even my other half looked at me and was wtf is that BA advert about.
Basically saying have a holiday and you could win it back,
Never been myself but looks expensive, if your winning, no problem, if your losing it must be a nightmare.
9th January 2019 at 9:53 pm #35877See the thing is, for kids, i believe it is the parents responsibility to activate “restricted” mode if they are going to allow their children to watch YouTube. Both my kids watch YouTube, they are 4 and 8 – My youngest son doesn’t have a YouTube account so is never signed in….. “restricted” mode still works for him even with no account.
