The move, aimed at tackling problem gambling and protecting other vulnerable customers, was announced by the Gambling Commission following several reviews.
The ban, due to take effect on 14 April, covers all online and offline betting activities except “non-remote lotteries” where payments are made face-to-face.
The commission’s chief executive, Neil McArthur, said: “Credit card gambling can lead to significant financial harm.
“The ban that we have announced today should minimise the risks of harm to consumers from gambling with money they do not have.
