Hey guys, I’ve been lurking on here since pretty much the beginning. I’m 26 and working class (yeah money is my motivator for gambling even when I know you’ll never win long term). Happy at the big wins but sad as well at the losses. Today I’m in the latter category. Started the year debt free after getting over a horrible year of relapses, only for this month to beat em all. Taken out two loans to the tune of $6,000 blew the lot along with my savings as well. Really fucking demotivating as I was doing so well before this, and never thought I’d take loans to gamble yet here I am. Back to square one.
I suppose what I’m on here for is a bit of advice and support from those of you who have gotten through the other side. Absolutely love watching The Bandit and 9/10 he keeps me out of the casinos (self-excluded from all forms of gambling in my area, but online is a different beast don’t have GamStop in New Zealand sadly) but it’s the other 1/10 I’m struggling with. How do you do get past it and be normal again?
25th March 2019 at 12:37 pm #57402Sorry no one responded sooner mate,
To be honest I’m not the best for this as im struggling to beat it myself I have managed to go a while before I fuck up and its usually through getting super involved in a mobile phone game like angry birds lol it keeps you occupied and as for me it’s usually bordom also mixed with stress and alcohol that cause me to do it and the desire for an instant lump of cash but if you can try to push those urges to the back or your mind and try to remember vividly the sickening feeling when you’ve lost a chunk or that moment when you need to buy something but can’t because you blew your money gambling…
That’s my advice man it helps me but you do have to be strong willed and not give in as I know from experience its a lot easier said than done
25th March 2019 at 4:42 pm #57450Sorry to hear about your story mate. As hard as it seems it’s best to somehow write the money off. Don’t try and chase it. I did similar last year and I’m still paying the price. I can however see light at the end of the tunnel. I just knuckled down in my job and grafted the only way i know how. If your tempted in the future just remember that sick feeling you had when you lost that amount. It soon puts you off depositing. Good luck.
25th March 2019 at 5:00 pm #57455Shit times mate. But hey ho its only money.
Gamblers Anonymous is a good start. My bird at the time made me go and i didnt spunk anything for 2 years.
25th March 2019 at 5:03 pm #57459There’s nothing normal about the system we live in, i have gambled for 13 to 14 years now on and off. The first time i gambled all my wages in the bookies, was the hardest went a month without a good proper meal a week without any gas, or electric and no family to rely on.
The hardest part is getting out your head that the next one has to pay, which is why we put more and more in. The second is willpower, all around us there is ads, big win pictures etc… which programme the mind to think a certain way (Avoid at all costs) stops the temptation. Third the only person that can hep You is YOU, change the mind set, become more than just that feeling of the loss we all experience in a rigged system.
Finally if i have nothing, so i have nothing to lose other than my self respect and respect for those who struggle daily in this system.
I know its not much, but i hope you find your way.
125th March 2019 at 5:41 pm #57447The only way to beat it in my opinion is finding hobbies. Once the boredom takes hold your brain is wired to remember what you used to do when you had free time.
Go to GA meetings every night they do work for a lot of people
Wishing you all the best
25th March 2019 at 5:42 pm #57468Hey mate I’m from NZ Tauranga, I went through what your going through years ago too, best option is to use the self exclude tool from casinos.
For me I used to play big because I had a large income I then lost that income, but couldn’t get passed the big bets per spin so what I did was open a casino and use SEK as my currency for some reason I feel okay betting 10sek even though it’s 2$ NZD and to me this would have been small before, however it seems to still give me that thrill of betting big if that makes any sense.
any way mate

25th March 2019 at 8:40 pm #57521Thanks for the replies guys. It’s given me a bit more hope and positive look on the future. With a bit of luck my loan will be gone by new year which is something. Just gotta stay positive and try and forget the loss which is hard, but only 10 weeks wages overall.

Hi Avernite… Its a long process brother.. Here’s something I posted earlier for another poster, I hope you find it helpful..
1st off is give yourself ample time to recover as you have an illness, so to say, that may never been cured, but treatment is available & must be used daily.
A couple off pointers for you is, you/me have a dangerous addiction, it does not matter how much we win, the old saying about a room full of money is that a gambler will always ask for a bigger room. As no amounts of winning will be enough, No Amounts.
This is hard to get into your Gambling head, different people have different ways and means to give up gambling.
A few suggestions is… Load up YouTube on a quiet night of clear thinking and listen to
It will help you understand your illness, and help you prepare for the future.
1. Do an act of kindness everyday for someone who does not know about it.
2. Get a hobbie, one that you enjoy, not something that’s seen as doing good.
3. Remember your Sick & need recovery time, usually for life.
4. Make amends to folk Helping you recover.
5. Be nice to yourself & remember all gamblers have a selfishness about them, so treat yourself more often.
6. Find someone to confide in, who you can goto on days your feeling bad or isolated.
7. Talk about your addiction & what triggers you feel. Or post here, if it helps you.
8. Only ever carry cash, leave all debit cards etc in the house.
9. If/When buying anything big, ask to meet someone to go shopping with you.
10. Find a routine that your comfortable with, to help in your day to day life, try not to get Down about not being able to gamble & see it as freeing your time up for more happy-go-lucky times.
And most importantly, do not feel bad about being an addict, as I’m sure your a great dude, and learn to love yourself again. ♥
26th March 2019 at 8:03 am #57616Cheers Stevie will deffo give it a listen 🙂 I’m lucky enough to have access to a free counselor and am on the verge of giving GA a crack just to see if it helps. A couple of my close friends know my issues, but sometimes it feels like a burden to them which I don’t like putting on people. Oddly enough I’m the only gambler in my group of friends except for one other fella I don’t see often, bit worried about him though as he’s a bit of a roulette fiend who just martingales red/black (Blackjack is my horrible vice :O)

Yeah brother.. I hear you, one of the benefits of GA is being around like minded people.
Yup I’ve had the 2 gambles you mentioned their in my time lol.. Didn’t go 2 well, lost £1,000 1 night chasing Black when I was a lad. Done the Blackjack when I was older.
Had a mate who keeped with the Martingale system and it ruined him. It’s not a wise move imo.
Good Luck in your travels and post some updates, we don’t judge. 🙂
