Under a proposed crackdown by regulators.

It is suggested they could use household earnings and wealth data from office of national statistics to assess what a customer can afford.

It is proposed that they will then be required under the terms of their licence to ensure customers do not become problem gamblers by actively and closely monitoring their betting. Those that breach their licences can not only be fined but also to have their licence to operate in the UK revoked.

The commission suggest the firms should watch for indicators such as chasing losses, erratic betting patterns, frequency of play, large losses and multiple payment methods.

The commission will also next month unveil plans to ban gamblers from using credit cards to stop people using money they do not have.

Whats peoples views should it happen/will it happen???

I think it has to happen. Not enough is done to protect gamblers from themselves. I am all about accountability, but at the end of the day it’s an addiction, just like any other.

For me personally, I think it will be a pain. But do I think it’s right? Yes.

Where do you draw the line ? Someone who’s deposited 3 times in an hour. 4 times 5 times. £100 £200 or £500. Someone who’s upped their stake from 40p to £2 in a session. This is near on impossible to monitor in my opinion. The only way in my opinion to make this work would be to make deposit limits compulsory depending on disposable income. Someone may earn a grand a week but only has £100 spare where someone else could earn half that and have £200 left after bills. What next an income and expenditure form for every player. Online gambling is dangerous and can get out of hand easily that’s fact but i can’t see how the casinos can monitor this on a daily basis unless the player has dramatically changed their betting pattern in a session or series of sessions. Good luck with that one.

I’ve only ever had Betfair kind of checking up on me ( this was AFTER I had given them all my money ) and it was a kind of “we noticed you have deposited more than you usually do” kind of message and I think they were going to lock account if I didn’t get back to them but I think there should be some deposit limits put in place

I agree with Haz. What about the younger people who live with parents but work full time and have no outgoings? It’s their money and their choice in my opinion. I do also think mandatory deposit limits should be set, with them being unable to remove them within 24 hours as most sites let you. I think it should be at least a week cool off period before you’re allowed to accept the changes.

I think all payment methods should disappear and there should be something like a gamblers card that in which an individual may apply for it and be given a card with a limit of transferable cash to it per month. The application for this card could be very much like a mortgage where they look at your yearly earning then debts ie loan repayments and how much you spend on household stuff like food then say ok sir/madam after all information is collected it is recommended that you have £xx per month available to top up your card. You also have to agree that in your application that all the information you give is true and correct same as a mortgage application and if you lie to get more available funds at that point it’s your own fault and your revoked banning you from gambling online until such a time you can re-apply after a face to face meeting :/

So in summary what would this method achieve.

    1. Set a monthly deposit allowance.

    2. Controlled gambling.

    3. Self-accountability if you lie on your application it is your fault but the damage is still limited.

    4. Easier to track as its one central card system.

I dunno its an idea but very feasible to me some people even though they don’t have a problem wouldn’t like the system but is it better for the greater good? there’s probably more that could be done in regards to this idea to make it more suitable. any thoughts?

I don’t think it should ever be allowed on credit, if you have to borrow to gamble then you 100% shouldn’t be gambling, phone payments, credit cards etc should definitely be banned

    I like your idea seedy

Noticed that kwiff seem to have a £500 deposit limit per day , maybe you can change it but I think that’s a good thing , yeah £500 is still a lot but most sites will let you deposit as much as you want

Yeah difficult for it to be implemented but still we can hope that it could be a thing or at least something similar and stopping credit cards is a good first step.
