My first gambling experience was with my Old Man going to Haydock races when I was around 11 or 12, he said he would give me £10 to put on a horse of my choice. Picked one out because I liked the name and it only went and came in at 16/1; that was me getting a new pushbike on the way home that I’d been wanting!
My first independent experience was probably playing the fruties in the local pub where my sister used to work. My first legal gambling experience was going to the casino at 18 years old and busting out of a £20 poker comp embarrassingly fast. However, whist waiting for my mate to finish playing the same comp I stuck a tenner in a slot machine, I had never played any slots apart from pub fruties at this point. I clearly remember it being lucky ladies charm on a 50p bet size. On the 3rd or 4th press the bonus rolled in, had no clue what was going on at the time and just saw the win keep counting up after many, many retriggers! About 20 minutes later the bonus finishes and I’m walking to the cash desk with my cashout voucher for around £650 and am absolutely astonished I’ve got a load of £50 notes in my pocket! Talk about beginners luck eh, if only at the time I knew it didn’t work out like that every time. It was almost like the casino wanted me to win big on my first trip to keep me coming back for more, I’ll never forget that feeling of my first big win..
Welcome Josh!
Which Grosvenor in Manchester did you deal at? I often play blackjack in the one near China town as it’s round the corner from my main office so I sometimes nip in if I fancy a quick session haha.
Hi Andy, thanks pal.
I used to work at the one on Bury New Road on the other side of town! I’ve been in the Soames China Town one on George Street before though, a smaller place however a decent atmosphere in there! These days if I play in Manchester I tend to frequent Manchester 235 owned by Ceasars Entertainment which is situated in the Great Northern just off Deansgate; juicy games in terms of the cash on the table and a nice bar area and main casino floor too.
Good luck in your future blackjack sessions fella!
Welcome josh. Sounds like an awesome job you got, have you any crazy bad beat stories you have seen or any from encounters with pro players we may have heard of?
Hi Malky, thanks mate!
Of course, I have all kinds of bad beat stories; players hate me sometimes with the cards I can put out! The worst thing I ever saw whilst dealing was in a £1200 buy in event; so not a cheap amateur tournament. The board ran out K,K,A,K,K so quads with an ace kicker in the middle of the table, it was heads up at the river where player 1 went all in; player 2 tank’s for 5 minutes and then folds?!?! Somehow, player 2’s thought process at the time was he didn’t understand that no matter what hole cards he held; it was impossible for this not to be a chop pot; sigh.
In regard to the pro players, I know and deal to pretty much all of them. Sometimes at events we manage to get out for drinks with them every now and again as directly tipping is forbidden in most countries outside of the UK as this opens up collusion possibilities so they show their appreciation by pretty much letting the dealing staff have a free bar! Some of the big names I can name drop are Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Igor Kurganov (that’s me and him in my profile avatar), Phil Helmuth, John Juanda, Erik Siedel, Liv Boeree, Fedor Holz, pretty much any sponsored pro that plays EPT’s and WSOP’s. The tours also attract lots of celebrities, at my table I’ve had Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad, Neymar Jr, Gerard Piqué, David Haye, Rafael Nadal and Sergio Garcia to name a few.
I always lose my shit and panic when I get the big names at my table, especially if the event is televised/streamed for the world to see you mess up. I’m always sat there like ‘Josh, you got this. Do not f**k this up!’
1Yes, I have recently come to the end of my Gamstop 6 month exclusion period and the steps that Joemama has stated are indeed correct.
I personally signed up due to a temporary reduction in income and not wanting to be tempted to gamble when rather skint for a few months.
Remember when you re-sign up to casinos to set yourself deposit/play limits before you start playing as to not end up in the same position again and so you can enjoy playing within your means. If all else fails and you feel yourself slipping back into old habits and spending a little too much you can always re-sign up to Gamstop too!
Good luck back on the slots, Sir.
Nope, Nik from BTG has stated that DHV2 will be released at ‘some point’ in January; however when this is no one seems to know.
However, a little birdie has told me that the soundtrack that is going to be featured in DHV2 is a very well known song!
BTG do seem to have started a trend amongst other providers with feature buy slots, I too hope that slot providers move away from feature buys as we all know they can be rather dangerous and degenerate. I’m also just not to keen on the concept as it seems to take the fun away from playing the slot IMO.
